As an artist branding photographer, the goal is never just to “get good headshots.” It’s to translate a creative voice into imagery that actually feels like the person behind the work.
That was exactly the focus of this session with painter and muralist Devona Stimpson, who was in Hagerstown for Hagerfest and the National Mural Awards, where she was recognized for her work on a national stage.
Instead of treating this as a traditional branding shoot, we approached it as a fine art portrait experience rooted in process, movement, and storytelling. From the beginning, we knew this session couldn’t feel corporate. We leaned into dramatic light, painterly composition, movement, and details that told the story of an artist in her element. Portraits that felt cinematic instead of performative.
When you’re photographing an artist, especially someone working at Devona’s level, the images can’t feel disconnected from the medium. Her murals are layered, expressive, and full of motion, so the portraits needed to reflect that same energy.
We focused on:
That balance is what separates standard branding photos from true artist branding photography.
At Audrey Rouzer Portraits, branding work is built around one core idea: people are not brands in the flat, corporate sense. They are living, evolving artists, entrepreneurs, and creatives.
So instead of forcing a template, every session is built around how someone actually works and what they want to communicate without saying a word.
For Devona, that meant leaning into a more cinematic, fine art direction. Light and shadow were treated intentionally. Composition was slower. Nothing felt rushed. The goal was to document a real creative identity, not manufacture one.

For most artists, their work speaks before they do. But in a digital world, your imagery often becomes the first introduction.
Strong artist branding photographer work helps bridge that gap. It shows potential collectors, collaborators, galleries, and clients not just what you make, but how you move through the world while making it.
It creates recognition before explanation.
One of the most powerful parts of this session was the collaboration itself. When artists are seen and supported by other creatives who understand the process, the entire experience shifts.
We approach branding sessions as storytelling instead of content creation. The goal isn’t to make someone fit into a trendy template. It’s to create imagery that feels unmistakably connected to who they are and what they bring into the world.
Watching Devona step into a season of recognition while also creating new work in Hagerstown was a reminder of why these sessions matter so much.
One of the things we loved most about this session was the collaboration behind it. When creatives are surrounded by people who genuinely see and understand their work, the energy shifts. The session becomes less about “taking photos” and more about documenting identity, process, and presence.
We’re endlessly inspired by artists who create boldly, take up space unapologetically, and allow themselves to be seen in the middle of the process instead of only after the masterpiece is complete.
Devona, thank you for trusting us with your vision while you were here. We’re honored to have documented this chapter for you.
If you’re an artist, entrepreneur, or creative looking for branding photography that actually feels like you, we create custom portrait experiences designed around your story, your work, and the way you want people to feel when they see your images.
